What is Oral Conscious Sedation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oral conscious sedation uses an oral sedative prescribed by your dentist to help you relax and feel comfortable during any type of dental treatment. Typically, you will pick up your sedative before your appointment and take it when you arrive or shortly beforehand. Though it will vary depending on the patient, the pill should start to take effect in about 15 to 30 minutes. Once working, you should remain awake and able to answer questions or respond to requests. You may feel groggy or sleepy, and may fall asleep, but in most cases, patients are able to remain awake but relaxed for the duration of their visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Does Oral Conscious Sedation Feel Like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oral conscious sedation feels different for each patient, but many describe it as being very relaxing. While you most likely won\u2019t fall completely asleep, you may feel sleepy or have difficulty staying awake. In some cases, patients do not remember much or anything at all about their appointment, which can be an added benefit. Some people even say they feel like time passes faster under sedation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Happens After My Appointment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After your treatment has been completed, you will need to ride home with a trusted friend or family member. Never use a rideshare or taxi following sedation. You should plan on taking the rest of the day off from your regular activities and get plenty of rest so your sedative can wear off. Do not attempt to drive or operate any heavy machinery. After a complete night\u2019s sleep, you should feel completely normal, and any traces of the sedative should have left your system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, there\u2019s no shame in experiencing dental anxiety. That\u2019s why sedation dentistry exists.
