My desire to work in dentistry began when I was 16 years old, so I’ve had plenty of time to think about what sets a good dental office apart from a great one. I often hear from my patients that they didn’t really know how to choose a place to take care of their smile beyond a Google search. While I’m glad they found their way to me, I want to help other patients in Port Charlotte who might be facing the same decision. Here is what I would look for while searching for a new dentist:
They Explain Before They Act
Nobody likes surprises — especially in the dental chair! A good dentist will walk you through what they see, what they recommend, why they recommend it, and what to expect before any treatment gets started. If you leave an appointment with a bill, unsure of what just happened or why, that is a red flag. You should always feel like an active participant in your care, not a passive spectator.
They Handle Nervous Patients with Care
Occasionally, a patient will tell me that they’ve had an experience where they were treated poorly, and it’s upsetting each time. When you call a practice, let them know if you’re nervous or have specific things you want to avoid and see how they respond. Sedation dentistry is another service you should ask about, since it can do a lot to soothe your nerves and create a positive treatment experience.
They Have the Training and Services You Need
Credentials are most relevant when they match what you’re actually having done. If you need implants, for example, ask about the dentist’s surgical training and how they keep learning. I have completed hundreds of hours of surgical training at a prestigious implant institute, and I keep up with continuing education because the field is ever-evolving.
They Have Glowing Reviews About Their Team
Star ratings can be a good starting place when you’re initially looking at a practice, but stars don’t say much on their own. Instead, look at the words and the stories patients tell. They often mention the front desk staff and hygienists by name when they feel cared for, and that tends to be a good sign. And if you see repeated comments about patients feeling rushed or confused? That’s an indicator it may be best to look elsewhere for care.
They Clearly Communicate About Costs
The cost of your care shouldn’t be hidden behind a curtain. A good office takes your insurance, explains what it covers, provides clear information about your out-of-pocket obligation, and offers financing if you need it. Your budget shouldn’t prevent you from getting good care, and no one should make you feel judged for asking about available provisions.
My Port Charlotte team and I strive to meet all of these criteria every day. So, if you’re in the area and looking for a new dental home, I’d be glad to serve you at Caring Way Dentistry.
