If you suffer from moderate to severe dental anxiety, you may be hesitant to visit your dentist for even routine exams and cleanings. The good news is that with oral conscious sedation, you can comfortably undergo a variety of oral health procedures, including your routine preventive care. If you’re considering trying this safe, effective way to make your treatment less stressful, here’s what you can expect to feel during your appointment.
What is Oral Conscious Sedation?
Oral conscious sedation uses an oral sedative prescribed by your dentist to help you relax and feel comfortable during any type of dental treatment. Typically, you will pick up your sedative before your appointment and take it when you arrive or shortly beforehand. Though it will vary depending on the patient, the pill should start to take effect in about 15 to 30 minutes. Once working, you should remain awake and able to answer questions or respond to requests. You may feel groggy or sleepy, and may fall asleep, but in most cases, patients are able to remain awake but relaxed for the duration of their visit.
What Does Oral Conscious Sedation Feel Like?
Oral conscious sedation feels different for each patient, but many describe it as being very relaxing. While you most likely won’t fall completely asleep, you may feel sleepy or have difficulty staying awake. In some cases, patients do not remember much or anything at all about their appointment, which can be an added benefit. Some people even say they feel like time passes faster under sedation.
What Happens After My Appointment?
After your treatment has been completed, you will need to ride home with a trusted friend or family member. Never use a rideshare or taxi following sedation. You should plan on taking the rest of the day off from your regular activities and get plenty of rest so your sedative can wear off. Do not attempt to drive or operate any heavy machinery. After a complete night’s sleep, you should feel completely normal, and any traces of the sedative should have left your system.
Remember, there’s no shame in experiencing dental anxiety. That’s why sedation dentistry exists. If you’re planning on trying oral conscious sedation at your next dental appointment, congratulations for taking an important step towards protecting your smile. The great news is that with this safe, effective treatment, you can experience a more calm, comfortable time in the dental chair!
